“Macalla” is a 72 × 48 inch original contemporary painting created in 2025 using acrylic and natural earth paints. Part of the ongoing “Paintings as Portals” series, this large-scale work explores themes of transformation, grief, healing, and renewal.

Inspired in part by the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in Asheville, North Carolina, “Macalla” reflects on cycles of loss, resilience, hope, and the process of finding meaning through the struggle of transformation. The title comes from the Irish word for “echo,” interpreted as “the son of a cliff.”
