Tobar îs the Irish word for a well or spring , and is a common root word for some towns and place in Ireland. There are many sacred tobars or holy wells that I visit as much as I can when I’m in Ireland.
Grian is the Irish word for sun. Every morning here in Asheville I walk to the river to see the source of so much life in this region, the great artery of the French broad river and then to see the sun rising over the eastern mountains and RAD ( River arts district ) buildings. I make a gesture of thanks to the sun and river and have a set of movements that I do welcoming the sun into my heart. I say a kind of prayer in Irish that starts like this…..
Tá and Grian ag taitneamh sa spéir. Tugaim an ghrian isteach i mo chroí anois. Agus anois tá mo chroí ag taitneamh. Go raibh maith agat a ghrian. In English…..The sun is shining in the sky, I bring the sun now into my heart. And now my heart is shining. Thank you Sun.
I continue this thanks with the river the land and my own body.
I do this seven times each day.
this small painting emerged from this practice and my wish to share more about my portal pieces, like all my portal paintings it felt like it had its own way of forming and showed me the way.
